Weekly Announcements

October 18, 2021

This email has lots of important information – please read thoroughly!

CIES 2022 –  DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS EXTENDED TO 11:59 PM ET on OCTOBER 27th 2021.

The deadline for submissions has been adjusted due to the extraordinarily challenging times that we live in. With all that people are juggling, we would like to keep the submission portal open for ONE MORE WEEK, in order to give everyone interested in participating in CIES a chance to submit a high-quality proposal.

The submission portal is OPEN. Using either a CIES Membership ID or a GUEST ID and password, you can log into the All Academic System to submit your proposal for CIES 2022.

Please test your access to the system early.  We are a small team and last-minute technology snafus might not be handled in time.  We don’t want you to panic or have problems submitting your proposal, so do test your access earlier rather than at the last minute when we might not be able to help you.

Within the system, you will be able to submit proposals for one of our many options including papers, posters, pre-conference workshops and New Scholars Dissertation and Publications Workshops.

If you are unfamiliar with how to use All Academic, we also have handy instructions on our site.  The portal will remain open until 11:59 PM, US Eastern Time, on OCTOBER 27th – so please submit your proposals by then. The deadline will NOT be extended beyond the 27th.

Please register to be a volunteer while you are in the system as well.  Also, review criteria for proposals are also available.

Registration rates for the Conference will be determined by the CIES Board by the end of the month.  All rates will be posted on the website by the end of October.

Please email the conference team at cies2022@cies.us if you have any questions!

CIES DEPENDS ON VOLUNTEERS

The response to CIES 2022  has been overwhelming.  We are hearing from people all over the world who are engaging with the theme, and working and collaborating to submit proposals before the deadline of midnight ET, on October 20th

But we also need people to volunteer!  The conference depends on the community to serve as reviewers and as chairs and discussants for panels.

You can volunteer for one of these CRITICAL roles, by going into All Academic and letting us know.  By either using either a CIES Membership ID or a GUEST ID and password, once you log in – click on the link that says  “Volunteer to become a Chair, Discussant, or Reviewer”.

After the submission system closes, this is your opportunity to help craft the conference by helping us review the proposals.  We can ensure we make decisions to let people know as soon as possible about the status of their proposal.

This is a great opportunity for CIES members to see the range of proposals that are part of our conference.  The commitment of time is modest and the rewards of being a part of the peer review process helps make the conference a success.  Please consider being a reviewer!  Reviews will be conducted in November.

Remember – proposals will be accepted until October 20th and you will be able to submit proposals for one of our many options including papers, posters, pre-conference workshops and New Scholars Dissertation and Publications Workshops.

You won’t want to miss even one of these exciting bulletins, full of helpful information.  All of our announcements are housed on our CIES 2022 website – so just head there if you need to catch up or can’t remember a detail!

Every week we plan to share exciting details, important timelines and information that helps you plan for a professionally and personally satisfying CIES experience.  We recognize that the world is still in flux and we aim to be transparent and helpful as we help you prepare to attend CIES 2022 – stay tuned, check out the website and email the conference team at cies2022@cies.us if you have any questions!

Using either a CIES Membership ID or a GUEST ID and password, you can log into the All Academic System to submit your proposal for CIES 2022.

Every week – we try to make sure we provide you with the latest news as we plan CIES 2022 but this week the only exciting news is that you, your friends, colleagues, social media followers, and even your neighbor, can all submit a proposal for consideration for what is shaping up to be an exciting conference.

You won’t want to miss even one of these exciting bulletins, full of helpful information.  All of our announcements are housed on our CIES 2022 website – so just head there if you need to catch up or can’t remember a detail!

Week 4: September 24, 2021

CIES 2022 –  Paper portal will open shortly.  New tech features should make things easier!

The theme for CIES 2022 focuses on Reimagining the Power of Idea/Lism and when we talk about reimagining – we really wanted to ensure we were reimagining a lot!

Every week – we try to make sure we provide you with the latest news as we plan CIES 2022.  You won’t want to miss even one of these exciting bulletins, full of helpful information.  All of our announcements are housed on our CIES 2022 website– so just head there if you need to catch up or can’t remember a detail!

One of the concerns CIES members have had from the 2021 Conference was the difficulty in logging into the different systems.  CIES members have a Member Login which takes you to the CIES member portal where you can connect with CIES members, pay your registration if you are a returning member and join a Special Interest Group.  We also used to have people log in to All Academic, and so people would create different logins for the different platforms. For 2022, we are trying to streamline things so you don’t have to remember multiple passwords.  Your CIES member login and password should be able to open everything up for you.  This will also be your login and password for the Conference Hub when that is up and running.

Once the portal is open, you should have at least three weeks to upload your submissions.  For more information about Submissions, please check the Submissions page on the website.

Week 3: September 17, 2021

CIES 2022 – Submit a paper for our hybrid conference – Portal to open SHORTLY – don’t miss out on your chance to be part of CIES 2022.

CIES 2022 will be held in Minneapolis and virtually. So what does a hybrid conference look like? For CIES 2022, we are taking some risks while planning an ambitious program for people who come to Minneapolis and for those who might prefer to attend virtually. The choice of Minneapolis as a city was made by the CIES Board of Directors a few years ago – but in light of the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and its subsequent role as the epicenter of racial justice fights in the US, we believe that it is a powerful place for us to gather in 2022.

Meeting in different cities allows CIES members a chance to immerse themselves in the context of the conference location. Learning from experts who might otherwise not come to CIES, engaging in the culture of the city, and networking with educators in the host city makes the conference a more dynamic and unique experience. The 2022 CIES team is developing a rich and exciting program that takes advantage of all that we can learn from the city.

Yet, we know some people might be unable or unwilling to travel to the conference site in April 2022. At this point, we are planning two types of panel presentations: Fully face to face at the conference, and fully virtual presentations at set times during the week. The onsite presentations will be similar to prior years, and will be only open to onsite registrants. The virtual sessions, which we are calling Pajama Panels, will be held at two times each day (more details will be forthcoming). These sessions will be held early in the morning or later in the evening, which will be open to ALL CIES registrants.

More information on all of this information will be forthcoming. In the meantime, we encourage you to read the theme, prepare a paper, panel, book launch, poster, or workshop for submission, and get excited about the conference.

Week 2: September 10, 2021

CIES 2022 – A TIMELY THEME FOR CIES

Last week we launched the CIES 2022 website with a wealth of information about the theme, the conference venues (both in Minneapolis and online) and gave you an initial sense of what to expect at CIES 2022. As we move to this new world of blending face to face and virtual events, we found that CIES members would prefer to use one login, which is what we are working on. When All Academic opens, you should be able to use one login ID and password for all CIES 2022 activities and your CIES membership. While we wait for that exciting advancement to occur, we encourage you to read the theme and begin your plans to submit a proposal to CIES 2022.

Our theme – Reimagining the Power of Idea/Lism has four subthemes. We wanted to highlight two this week as they are timely and resonate with the current global challenges we are facing. We are seeing “Tectonic shifts” where people are adapting to trauma in the moment. We hope that this track will bring people together to share:

Empirical and theoretical approaches to address the pandemic and its impact on education, including the
intensification of pre-existing trends.

  • Initiatives and critiques from international, national, and local attitudes/actions to support students in the midst
    of COVID-19.
  • Unintended consequences of COVID-19 on other traumatic/emergency situations and the impact on education.
  • Voices of front-line teachers, parents, students and others involved in education during COVID-19.

The second theme we highlight this week is “Battling the currents – the influence of politics and economics on education” which is especially relevant with the changes that are happening in local, regional and national governments around the world. Papers in this subtheme focus on:

  • Making transparent the role of politics and economics on education and vice versa.
  • Sharing tensions between where education is crafted and where education is being ‘done’.
  • Understanding the role of decolonial, inclusive, anti-racist and pro-democracy movements in education.
  • Learning and teaching from these movements and anticipating the impact on future generations.
  • Framing the goals and outcomes of education and its influence on marginalized and minoritized communities and identities.

CIES 2022 is going to be an exciting chance for us to reunite with people who are doing work, researching and practicing, in the field of comparative and international education. While we wait for the portal to open start prepping your proposals now so that you can make sure you get your proposal in on time and during the window the submission portal is open. Don’t get left behind – CIES 2022 will be a memorable conference in so many ways!

Week 1: September 3, 2021

CIES 2022 – CALL FOR PAPERS AND PARTICIPATION!
CONFERENCE THEME – REIMAGINING THE POWER OF IDEA/LISM

CIES 2022 will be held between April 18-22, 2022 both face to face and virtually. The website, www.cies2022.org, is now open with details about the theme, the call for papers and participation and details about the face to face component of the conference. Over the next few weeks, we will continue to share exciting details about both aspects of the conference, and are looking forward to a robust and intellectually stimulating conference.

The CIES ALL ACADEMIC portal requires some technical and logistical maintenance to ensure a seamless and efficient process to accept and review proposals. As such, the portal will open in a few weeks, and we will keep the CIES community updated on that as soon as we know the system is ready to launch. In the meantime, please visit the website, begin to prepare your submissions and know that we will have a three-week window during which you can upload your submissions.
